7 Essential Public Speaking Tips: How to Nail Your Next Presentation?
Apr 06, 2026
Have you ever been asked to be a best man, or perhaps you have a high-stakes presentation at work that you just want to nail? If the thought of standing in front of a crowd makes your heart race, welcome to the club, 75% of people worldwide suffer from speech anxiety.
Many believe that great speakers are born with "bags of confidence," but I’m here to tell you that confidence is a learnable skill. It is something you earn through practice and preparation. Whether you are a naturally shy introvert or just out of practice, these actionable public speaking tips will help you transform your performance from mediocre to excellent.
1. Embrace the 90/10 Rule of Preparation
If you’ve seen my videos, you know I "bang on" about preparation. That’s because speeches are 90% preparation and only 10% delivery. If you skip the research and outlining, you are leaving 90% of your success to luck.
- Deep Research: Go beyond basic facts. Uncover fresh statistics or stories your audience hasn't heard before to provide real value.
- The Rule of Three: Humans generally remember only three main points. Structure your speech with a beginning, a middle (containing no more than three key takeaways), and a conclusion that summarizes them.
- Outline, Don't Script: Do not write out every word. A script makes you sound wooden and robotic. Instead, use bullet points to create a "well-worn path" for your brain to follow.
2. Master the "7-Second" Hook
You only have about 7 seconds to capture your audience's interest before they mentally check out or start checking their phones. Your opening line determines the success of the entire speech.
To grab immediate attention, try one of these four powerful hooks:
- A Powerful Statistic: Grounds your message in reality and builds credibility.
- A Thought-Provoking Question: Encourages the audience to participate mentally from the start.
- A Story or Anecdote: Captures imagination; people are 60% more likely to remember a story than a list of facts.
- A Bold or Controversial Statement: Piques curiosity by challenging pre-existing thoughts.
3. Control Your Anxiety with "Box Breathing"
Nerves are a natural "fight or flight" response to pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. To lower your heart rate and regain control:
- The Box Technique: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and wait for 4.
- Speak on the Exhale: A pro tip is to only speak when you are breathing out. This prevents that "wibbly squeaky" sound and makes your voice sound balanced and in control.
- Move Your Body: Adrenaline needs to be used up. Stretch, walk around the stage, or even do star jumps before you start to loosen your muscles and dissipate nervous energy.
4. Use Vocal Variety to Avoid Being Monotone
A monotone voice is a speech killer. To keep your audience engaged, you must vary your Volume, Pitch, and Pace.
- Pace: Slow down for important points to let them sink in.
- Volume: Raise your voice for excitement or lower it for dramatic, sad, or serious moments.
- The Power of the Pause: A 3-second pause feels like 30 seconds to the speaker, but to the audience, it’s a kindness that allows them to absorb your last point.
5. Harness the "Power Zone" of Gestures
Your body language communicates as much as your words. If you stand rigid or grip the podium, you look scared.
- The Power Zone: Keep your hand gestures between the top of your head and your belt buckle. Gestures in this zone convey authority; anything outside of it can look "like a lunatic."
- Intentional Eye Contact: Don't just scan the room. Pick a "friendly face," make a statement directly to them, and then move to someone on the other side of the room.
6. Stop Saying "Um" and Embrace the Silence
"Ums" and "ahs" happen when your brain needs a second to find the next thought. Instead of filling that silence with a filler word, just be silent. Identifying that you use fillers is the first step to stopping them. A brief pause makes you look thoughtful and confident, not confused.
7. Authenticity: Be Yourself, Not a Persona
Audiences can sense insincerity from a mile away. Stop trying to "hack" being authentic and just be who you are.
- Use Your Own Voice: Write your outline using the same language you would use when chatting with a friend.
- Embrace Imperfection: If you stumble over a word, don't beat yourself up. Owning a mistake or making a light joke about it actually makes the audience like you more because it shows you’re human.
Final Thoughts: Practice Makes Progress
No one is perfect on their first attempt. The people you see who seem full of charisma have simply spent more time "earning" their confidence through trial and error. Start with small opportunities, like speaking up in meetings, and build that muscle.
